Design 66 Challenge Contest Winners Announced

Three designs have been selected as winners of the Design 66 Challenge, sponsored by Avery Dennison Graphics & Reflectivei Products, Painesville, Ohio. “Salute the Soldiers,” a design by Daniel Wayne Logue, was selected as the winning entry—chosen by NASCAR Nationwide Series driveri Steve Wallace, the Rusty Wallace Racing team and by sponsor 5-Hour Energy. More than 120 entries from across the United States and Canada were submitted to the contest. -Read more-
Sun Chemical Names President

Printing ink manufacturer Sun Chemical, Parsippany, N.J., has named Charles Murray as president of North American Inks. In this role, Murray will be responsible for all of Sun Chemical’s North American ink business. Murray brings 27 years of industry experience and knowledge to the position and most recently worked as the managing director and corporate vice president of Sun Chemical’s business in the UK, Ireland and Nordic markets since 2004. Murray replaces Brian Leen, who is leaving the graphic arts industry after an 18 year career at Sun Chemical. -Read more-
Ripley's Installs Digital Signage

Digital signagei media controller company, BrightSign, Saratoga, Calif., announces that a total of 72 BrightSign solid-state digital media controllers are being used by Ripley Entertainment, Inc. to deliver exhibit displays in six of its Ripley's Believe It or Not! museums. The museums include the recently reopened San Francisco Ripley's Believe It or Not! Odditorium, where 25 new digital media systems were added as part of a $5 million renovation. The systems are used to make the exhibits more entertaining and more informative for visitors of all ages. -Read more-

Outdoor Advertising Industry Recycles

In the first seven months of 2010, the outdoor advertising industry recycled 1.56 million pounds of the PE (polyethylene) substratei on which billboards are printed. This represents a better than 100 percent increase over recycling in 2009, the first year in which the industry engaged in a coordinated recycling program. -Read more-

A look at the fine art of shape-cutting materials

Recently my shop was looking at replacing our CNC table with a newer model. So of course, we also wanted to take a look at other methods of shape-cutting materials in addition to a traditional CNC routeri. Laseri, water-jet and plasma cutters are all in common use, but we wanted to know more. I started out with a visit to a company that creates 3-D exhibits and sculptures, since they make much more extensive and varied use of various cutting technologies than we do. The company is 3D Services, located in Burnaby, BC. -Read more-
